How sound is created and what are its properties that affect our voice

Sound is a vibration that propagates as an acoustic wave, through a transmission medium such as a gas, liquid or solid. In human physiology and psychology, sound is the reception of such waves and their perception by the brain. Only acoustic waves that have frequencies lying between about 20 Hz and 20 kHz, the audio frequency range, can be heard by humans.
Sound waves are characterized by these generic properties:
  • (1) Frequency, or its inverse, wavelength: the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit of time.
  • (2) Amplitude, sound pressure or Intensity: the power carried by sound waves
  • (3) Speed of sound: the distance travelled per unit time by a sound wave
  • (4) Direction
Pitch is perceived as how "low" or "high" a sound is and represents the cyclic, repetitive nature of the vibrations that make up sound. For simple sounds, pitch relates to the frequency of the slowest vibration in the sound. It is not to be confused with loudness which is perceived as how "loud" or "soft" a sound is and relates to the totalled number of auditory nerve stimulations over short cyclic time periods.
The sound of your voice is determined by the size of your vocal cords and other physiological factors. Usually, by age 17, vocal cords are fully developed the voice stabilizes. While it's not possible to completely alter your voice from high to low or vice versa (without hormonal treatment or an operation), there are techniques you can try to make slight changes to your pitch and volume and bring out the best in your natural voice.
Per American Scientist , typical male voices range in pitch from 85 hertz to 180 hertz; typical female voices, from 165 hertz to 255 hertz.
A study found that on average, women preferred a lower pitched voice over a higher pitched voice except when the lower frequency was below ∼96 Hz, in which case women tended to prefer the higher pitched voice. High-pitched women's voices are perceived as feminine and youthful and flirtatious , and increase the perceived likelihood of sexual infidelity.
